2012 - January Diary

Supporting Nature

Wildlife habitats are gradually disappearing as we gradually increase our share of the space that are available on our planet. Most gardeners recognise that we need to maintain a diverse population of wildlife if our gardens and plots are to flourish. Not ALL insects are pests. Without the many pollinating insects we would struggle to produce many crops especially fruits. Many insects and birds also join forces with us to keep plant pests at bay. To encourage biodiversity means that we can cut down (if you still can't bear to cut out altogether),  use of chemicals. This is not only good for the environment but also for us. Not all caterpillars feed on our crops, many feed on wild plants such as nettles and the adult butterflies that they become not only are beautiful to watch but also are useful pollinators. Wildlife greatly enhances our enjoyment of the outdoor life - what gardener doesn't enjoy listening to birdsong whilst tending their plots. Support our wildlife and it will repay you with many hours of enjoyment! Click here to read how we encourage biodiversity on our plot and in our garden.

Bee and Ladybird Box
Ladybirds and bees work hard in the garden, so it's only fair to reward them with a comfy place to live - and the Bee and Ladybird Box is all that and more! The box is made from cedar which is renowned for resisting rotting, damage from water and warping and siting it close to vegetation and ground cover will have the solitary bees and ladybirds making a 'beeline' for their new home!

Sparrow Flats

Imaginatively designed Sparrow Flats are the perfect habitat for the sociable sparrows whose population has seen a sharp decline in recent years and a lack of suitable accommodation has been identified as a key factor. Made from high quality untreated pine and finished with a galvanized roof.

Lacewing Chamber

The Lacewing Chamber provides optimal conditions for overwintering of lacewings. The larvae of the common green lacewing are very effective predators of greenfly and other insect pests. The adults hibernate over winter but their survival is limited by the lack of suitable sites. £24.41
